Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has been competing with each other to make its technology the choice of the industry for high quality movies and high storage space discs. There has still not been a winner in this war. Quite bad for customers who want to commit to a technology. People will need to buy a Blu-Ray player to play the disc and HD-DVD player to watch movies or store data on it. It would be very wise for the manufacturers to choose a technology and go with it as not all customers can afford both. Maybe both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray technology developers can come up with a player that plays both disc on one device. Sony has adopted the Blu-Ray discs for it’s games console, Play Station 3. Both these technologies can and will make the DVD we use, obsolete.
HD-DVD Optical disc storage capacity:

  • 15 GB (single layer)
  • 30 GB (dual layer)
  • 51 GB (triple layer)

Blu-Ray Optical disc storage capacity:

  • 25 GB (single layer)
  • 50 GB (dual layer)

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has a read mechanism of 36 Mbit/s for single layer disc and 72 Mbit/s for double layer disc. You decide which one will work best for you because as of now, there is no clear winner or any compromise on the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats.
