ubuntu.pngUbuntu is Debian GNU/Linux based and community developed operating system sponsored by Canonical Ltd. It is owned by South African billionaire entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. It is available free of cost including enterprise releases and security updates. It aims of providing only free software yet provide an up-to-date stable operating system for the average user. Officially, Ubuntu was announced in October 20, 2004, which began by making a temporary fork of the Debian GNU/Linux project so that the users can get updated system frequently. Ubuntu is released a month after the release of Gnome and comes with the latest Gnome. Ubuntu mainly focuses on usability, accessibility, internationalization, regular release and ease installation. The Ubiquity installer allows installing Ubuntu to the hard disk from within the

Live CD environment without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. The users can see whether their hardware is compatible for this OS with the help of Live CD only then Ubuntu is installed and takes 256 MB of RAM and 4 GB of Hard disk space. Ubuntu comes with different softwares attached like Mozilla firefox, OpenOffice.org, instant messenger Pigdin and raster graphics editor GIMP. The most recent version of Ubuntu is Ubuntu7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) which is released in October 18, 2007.
